Hot footed at London Marathon for SeaparkAC
Wednesday, April 25th, 2007
2 members of Carrickfergus based SeaparkAC running club took part in the recent Flora London Marathon; the race attracted a field of over 39,000 runners on a day that temperatures exceeded over 70 degrees.
Gary Connolly and Bobby Irvine had the privilege the day before the race to meet and have their photo taken with the official starter of the London Marathon Northern Irelands own sporting hero Dame Mary Peters. They also had the privilege to meet some of the elite runners taking part in the event which included the world Marathon record holder Paul Tergat who was hoping to achieve a record time in London. Also Benita Johnson from Australia hoping for a personal best. Unfortunately the weather took its toll and both athletes missed out on their targets.
SeaparkAC athletes Gary and Bobby having trained hard over the winter had their sights set on achieving a fast time also but the weather proved to much and times were disappointing Bobby finished in 3hrs 44mins while Gary a short distance behind finished in 3hrs 52mins.
Well done to everyone who took part and especially well done to David Morwood from North Belfast Harriers for finishing in an impressive 2hrs 33mins.
